Ms. Aya Chebbi appointed as African Union Envoy for Youth
On November 1st, 2018, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has appointed Ms. Aya Chebbi from Tunisia as his Envoy for the Youth. The incumbent will serve as spokesperson of the African youth to the relevant African Union decision-making bodies. She will advocate, and raise awareness on, the implementation of the Demographic Dividend Roadmap, which was adopted by the 2017 African Union Heads of State and Government Summit, and the 2006 African Youth Charter. She will work in close collaboration with nine other members of the Youth Advisory Council designated by the Chairperson of the Commission. Ms. Aya Chebbi and the Advisory Council will engage with, and be supported by, relevant Departments of the Commission and other African Union entities, as well as youth organizations across the continent.
For African youths from the continent and the Diaspora, this appointment is a signal showing that the continental organization is investing in the next generation to make the African dream articulated in the AU Agenda 2063 come true. From now on, it is obvious that the role of the Envoy for the Youth and her Advisory Council will not be limited only to the advocacy or the raising of awareness on the implementation of the Demographic Dividend Roadmap. The African youths would also like to see the Chairperson of the African Union Commission engaging his Envoy for the Youth and members of the Advisory Council to play a powerful role in the fight against corruption during the elections contest as African Union Observers.
The voice of African Youth during that crucial period may change the narrative about the aftermaths of presidential and legislative elections in Africa. For example, next month, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, general elections will take place. The African Union Commission may catch this opportunity to deploy youths between 18 and 35 as observers with as overall mission to assess the compliance of DRC with the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance. In this era of democracy and public liberties’ revival, the Envoy for Youth embodies the hope of our generation to see young people taking the lead in the fight for the Africa we want.
